Perspective

The history of Mycenae is of Greece’s earliest civilization, and its remains are located on an archaeological site in the northeastern Peloponnesus, on a hill rising 900 feet above sea level. In the second millennium BCE, Mycenae a major center of Greek civilization, and a military stronghold that dominated much of southern Greece, Crete, the Cyclades Islands, and parts of Asia Minor. At its peak in 1350 BCE, its citadel and lower town had a population of 30,000 and an area of 77 acres. Its culture was distinguished by the monumental stone walls and citadel of the city of Tiryns, its tombs, and its gold mask of Agamemnon. The mask calls to mind the Trojan Wars waged by Agamemnon over the Mycenaean colony of Troy in Anatolia and Helen of Troy.
