Perspective

The history of America 1960-1973 really began with the Kennedy assassination in 1963 and ended with the American defeat in Vietnam and the resignation of President Nixon in 1974. The era’s political ethos was a confluence of the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement. In the same way, social taboos were shattered as social revolution embraced a counter-cultural protest against the Vietnam war and in support of the Civil Rights Movement.

The Cold War confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union spilled over into Latin America and Africa, as the superpowers vied for influence. After Kennedy’s assassination, tensions between the United States and Soviet Union became a contest for control of the Third World. This Cold War was characterized by proxy wars in Korea and Vietnam and insurgencies against puppet governments.

President Kennedy pressed for social reforms but was ineffectual in resolving civil rights tensions. In contrast, Lyndon Johnson passed the Great Society and War Against Poverty programs, along with major civil rights legislation and Medicare for the elderly and Medicaid for the poor. But Johnson was increasingly reviled for his escalation of the Vietnam War, and student protestors erupted around the globe. Unable to win the war, Johnson refused to run for another term in 1968. Then in that same year, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. gave rise to riots and new violence in the Civil Rights Movement.
