Our digital history of America 1900-1920 begins with the rise of the United States as the world’s richest and most powerful industrial economy. Moreover, innovation and industry were fueled by the arrival of millions of immigrant workers who provided a boundless supply of cheap labor. With that, railroads spanned the continent and factories flourished. But labor abuses and popular dissatisfaction with corruption and politics as usual gave rise to Progressivism, which led to reforms. As a result, new legislation mandated the federal income tax, the direct election of Senators, the prohibition of the manufacture and sale of alcohol, and the vote for women.

The Spanish–American War of 1899 began when Spain refused American demands to end its oppression of Cuba. This “splendid little war” was quickly concluded with a series of American victories at opposite ends of the earth, in Cuba and the Spanish Philippines. The resulting Treaty of Paris transferred to the United States the Spanish colonies of the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands, and the United States emerged as an empire. Although it was neutral during most of World War I, the United States joined the war on Germany in 1917 and led the Allies to victory in 1918.
